Am I a heretic?
CONSERVATIVES, brothers, this one is for you.
I realize that many of you look for specific Christian jargon words or catch phrases or slogans when evaluating whether an author or blogger is orthodox or not. That when you stumble upon a blog like mine, that deliberately avoids in house language and formulas, and even uses occult jargon on the odd occasion, that is seems the wiser course to assume I am a heretic until proved otherwise.
I also realize that few of you have time to read every blog you come across in any depth, and that when you see some of the topics I cover, and some of the art I draw attention to, and some of the people I link to, and some of the questions I ask, that you'll probably assume this is proof enough, that I am indeed a heretic.
I find that unfortunate, as the truth is I consider myself a theological conservative in many ways, certainly orthodox, and get frustrated at times when people make snap judgments, without even voicing their questions. So, I am going to try to make it a little easier on you. Here are some Christian slogans you should recognize. Here is a statement of my beliefs in your words, or at least as best I could translate it.
I affirm Jesus is Lord
I affirm YHWH as the one true God
I reject pantheistic mysticism
I affirm the authority of the Bible
I affirm the resurrection as historical
I reject the Gnostic gospels as unauthoritative
I affirm there will be a day of judgment
I affirm the Nicene Creed
I reject the Perennial Philosophy
I affirm we are saved by grace alone through faith alone
I do not uncritically endorse any Emerging Church author
I do not uncritically endorse any Christian mystic
I do not uncritically endorse anyone I link to
I do not uncritically endorse any artwork I display here
I invite people to critically engage with this material.
That is what it is there for.
Before going further, read my comment policy and read what I have written on cross cultural communication. And if you don't understand the difference between critical contextualization and religious syncretism, read what I have written on incarnational Christianity, as well as this article by Mike Frost, which is one article I do endorse.
If you still have questions, ask questions
Now, if the above slogans give you a warm fuzzy, you are probably not my intended audience. You are listening in on a foreign language conversation. You can expect culture shock. So take time to acclimatize. Learn the language first. Again, ask questions.
